Most people never complain about a slow website. They just leave. If someone is standing in their kitchen looking for a plumber, they’ll tap the next result long before your page finishes loading.
Where speed matters most
Speed matters everywhere, but it matters most when:
- Visitors are on phones, often on a weaker signal
- They’re comparing several businesses side by side
- They’re ready to act right now, such as calling for a repair or booking a table
That describes most local searches.
What usually slows a site down
In our experience, the same few things cause most of the problems:
Oversized images
Photos straight off a phone or camera are often many times larger than they need to be. Resizing and compressing them is usually the single biggest win.
Page builders and plugins
Drag-and-drop builders and stacks of plugins tend to load a lot of code on every page, whether that page uses it or not.
Too many third-party scripts
Chat widgets, tracking pixels, embedded feeds, and pop-ups each add weight. Some are worth it, and many aren’t.
Cheap or overloaded hosting
If the server itself is slow to respond, nothing else on the page can make up for it.
How to check your own site
Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool will test any page and show what’s slowing it down. Test your homepage and your most important service page, and look at the mobile results first.
What to do about it
- Resize and compress images before uploading them
- Remove plugins and scripts you don’t actually use
- Make sure the most important information, such as what you do, where, and how to reach you, shows up without waiting on anything else
If your site is built on a heavy theme or builder, there’s only so much tuning can do. Sometimes a lighter rebuild is the better investment. That’s the kind of thing we’re happy to give you a straight answer on: tell us about your site.
